This pastry will be a hit no matter what. Since it’s a sweet pastry, it can be either a dessert or breakfast food.

I made this last weekend for my parents' annual holiday party. Everyone loved it! At a big party like that, I usually like to have smaller bite-sized or individual serving desserts. Like cookies, mini tarts, fudge, etc. Sometimes at a big party, people don't want to cut into a cake or larger dessert. So I wasn't sure if my pastry tree would actually get eaten. But it was gone by the end of the party! Everyone kept complimenting it.
You don't need much to make this delicious pastry. Very few ingredients are needed, and also very little skill.

Start by preheating the oven to 375°F.
Make sure the puff pastry is thawed but still cold.
Lay out a sheet of parchment paper. Sprinkle with some flour.
Unfold one puff pastry onto the parchment paper. Use a rolling pin to roll out the dough into a rectangle roughly 11x13 inches.
Spread the Nutella onto the top of the rolled-out pastry. Leave a small perimeter around the edge.

Next, flour another sheet of parchment paper, and roll out the second puff pastry into another rectangle about 11x13 inches.
Place the second pastry on top of the first. Press gently to seal them together.
Cut the dough into a triangle so that it will resemble a Christmas tree. Reserve the excess pieces.

Now, you get to make the tree pretty.
Starting on one side of the tree, make horizontal slices about ½-inch to an inch apart. Make sure to stop cutting before reaching the center. Repeat the process on the other side, making sure to leave about 1 inch uncut in the center.
Starting at the bottom of the tree, twist each branch, having them all go in the same direction. Press the end of each branch onto the parchment paper. This will help prevent the pastry from untwisting.

Use the excess pastry pieces to cut out a star for the top of the tree. I used a cookie cutter for this, but you could also free-hand it. Next, cut a small piece to be the stump of the tree. I highly recommend saving the excess pieces as your own little snack. Even though they aren't pretty, they are still yummy!

When your tree is all assembled, beat the egg. Brush the egg over the top of the entire pastry.
Bake the pastry for 15-16 minutes, until it is golden brown.
Remove it from the oven and let it cool.

After your tree has cooled some, sprinkle it with powdered sugar. Now you’re ready to serve! And eat!
